Prenatal Nutrition Tips for Your Future Family

Ladies, everyone knows nutrition is important (even if we don’t always make the healthiest decisions
— never happens, right?). But when you become pregnant, everything changes. Suddenly, your choices don’t just affect your own health — they affect the health of your future family. It can seem like a lot of pressure, but there’s a simple solution.

USANA has developed the BabyCare Prenatal Essentials™* specifically for women who are pregnant, looking to become pregnant, or nursing. The combination of BabyCare Prenatal Mega Antioxidant and BabyCare Prenatal Chelated Mineral provides the right levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to fill in many of the gaps in your daily nutrition. When taken along with BiOmega™, Vitamin D, and Active Calcium™ Chewable, you can feel confident you are getting the best possible nutrition to support the health of you and your developing baby.

To further explain the benefits of superior prenatal supplements and the importance of nutrition for pregnant mothers in general, we are proud to introduce obstetrician, gynecologist, and USANA Associate Michelle Harden, MD. She has a great deal to teach us about the right decisions to make when it comes to prenatal nutrition.
Dr. Michelle Harden

Dr. Michelle Harden
Dr. Michelle Harden
What’s Up, USANA: Why is it so important for women who are pregnant or looking to become pregnant to take nutrition seriously?
Dr. Michelle Harden: It is important to realize that food is medicine. In today’s society, much of what the average woman consumes is not necessarily food, but “food-like.” Fast food and unhealthy convenience foods have contributed to weight and health problems for millions.

Lifestyle changes are the key to lowering your risk of health concerns. Eating whole foods that provide nutrients to fuel our bodies will not only help us stay healthy but will provide an optimal environment for a mother’s fetus.

We now know about the importance of epigenetics. Epigenetics is the study of heritable alterations in gene expressions that act independently of changes in DNA sequences. This means that in addition to inheriting genes from our parents, we can inherit their epigenetic “switches” that turn our genes on and off. Epigenetics dictates how our genes are actually utilized.

The nutrition consumed by mothers will likely play a role in the future health of the fetus. The biological response that can be produced by poor nutrition may actually influence the genes of the fetus. So the maternal diet can modulate gene expression in the offspring.

In the end, we may not be only what we eat, but what our grandmothers ate. So, understanding good nutrition is not only vital to mom’s health, but also to the health of her baby.

WUU: Why is it important to continue taking supplements while breastfeeding?
Dr. Harden: From a health perspective, breast milk is the most nutritious food you can give an infant. Consuming a healthy diet, eliminating as many preservatives and additives as possible, and choosing nutritional supplements rich in omega-3s and vitamin D can all support brain development and a baby’s immune system.

WUU: Why do you recommend USANA supplements to expecting mothers? Why are you excited
about the new product, BabyCare Prenatal Essentials?
Dr. Harden: USANA products contain bioavailable, high-quality nutrients and are made without unnecessary fillers, dyes, or artificial preservatives. Their products have been developed under the guidance of a scientific team that understands the importance of quality and promotes health.

I highly recommend USANA supplements to my patients and have consistently seen their positive influence within our patient population. I wouldn’t be comfortable recommending any other brand. Now that I have access to the highest quality prenatal supplement available, I will no longer have concerns over my recommendation of a prenatal. How exciting is that?!
BabyCare Prenatal Essentials, Active Calcium Chewable, BiOmega, Vitamin D

BabyCare Prenatal Essentials, Active Calcium Chewable, BiOmega, Vitamin D

WUU: Why is it important for women to receive enough iron, calcium, vitamin D, and omega-3s?
Dr. Harden: Calcium is important not only for bone development but also for smooth muscle function and circulation. During pregnancy a women’s blood volume increases significantly, so iron, as well as calcium, is a very important nutrient for a pregnant woman. Omega-3 essential fatty acids promote fetal brain development and can benefit a woman’s immune system. Vitamin D is important in pregnancy, because insufficiency is common.

So obtaining these nutrients from a healthy diet and a good prenatal supplement can enhance the fetal environment and overall health of the mother.

WUU: What are some common misconceptions about nutrition before, during, or after pregnancy?
Dr. Harden: Currently there is not enough awareness of what we are putting into our bodies. Popular advertisements seem to put the wrong messages into our mind about what is healthy. A common misconception is that a vitamin is just a vitamin — this is absolutely not true. What we need is more education on what we are feeding our bodies. That is why I love USANA. Before recommending USANA vitamins to my patients, I toured the manufacturing facilities, met with the scientists, and talked with Dave Wentz, the CEO of the company. I could not be more confident of the exceptional quality of supplements I am recommending to the mothers of our future generations.

Post Convention Highlight of our Company and My Team is in it!

About a month ago me and my team went to Salt Lake City, Utah to attend the international convention of our company being held annually. The experience is always exciting and invigorating seeing different people from all parts of the world doing the business. One of the thing that you will learn in attending the event is that you have to maximize your time, take note and write down all you could get from leaders around the world because this only happens in a year. Of course as a leader myself, I have to engage and talk to people and learn all the things that I can. After the convention, the trainings and seminars, I couldn't be prouder of myself as I was included in our company's post Convention Highlights! You can see me in the video below at 3:39 as we are preparing for the 5k Run for our Company's True Health Foundation, a foundation which help to provide the most critical human necessities to those who are suffering or in need.

Lessons learned, there were definitely tons of takeaways from this annual leadership convention but some of the thing that stick to me is that conventions like this is where you really will get most of the learnings, experiences that will be share by great leaders especially when they are just starting the business and the attitude that you need in building your business and the passion that you will need to keep moving forward.

Be. Do. Have.
This are only three words but it makes the difference.
"Be" the person that you want to be, learn how things should be done and how successful people do it and eventually you will master it.
"Do" the habit of a successful leader, you might not be comfortable at first but once you learn how to do it, it will be easy and you will be amaze at yourself. You won't believe that you were able to do it, things that scare you at first but once you're through it, you will love the journey and you will be prouder of yourself. And the last
"Have", have the things that you are working for, goals that you put in your dreamboard, received the things that you work hard for and share it with your loved ones. This three words are very important, who would have thought that I would be learning from great people like Tony Robbins? Dr Myron Wentz? or even running side by side with Dr Oz to raise money to help people? Believe in yourself and keep moving forward and you will get what you are yearning for.

The Cycle of Success - Great Take Aways from the Convention

As promise, here are some of the takeaways from the convention that I want to share with you.

The Cycle of Success
"Everyone wants success but nobody wants to do the hard work". Have you ever heard of this?
I want to become an artist, I want to get a promotion, I want to provide more to my family. I want to become fit and slim. I want to be successful in my business, I want to be successful with my relationship. I want to be successful with everything. A lot of people wants to be successful but nobody wants to do the hard work and some people wants to do the "shortcut" not enjoying the process of self development! If we want to be successful then we need to start changing ourselves first. As discuss and shared, there are 4 cycle of success that we need to develop within ourselves and set our minds into.

The Success Cycle

Potential - The potential, we all have the potential within ourselves and the belief that we can do something. Some potential are left untapped and is not being used hence we are not reaffirmed that we have the potential to do something good, to do something great.... We all know that we have potential but if we don't do anything about our potential, if we don't sharpen our saw and try to use them, we won't really know how and to what extent our potential could be which then get us to the next cycle.

Action - The Action, makes use of our potential and makes you do what you needed to do. Here, you will see what potential you really have and reaaffirms what your capable of. Well a lot of people will say that they did do made some action but the question is.. How much action did you really give it? Did you give your best or did you just try it for the sake of saying that you did something? Remember, if you have a big dream and you really want it, you will do everything to achieve it regardless if you've been rejected a thousand times, regardless if you've been surrounded by negative people, regardless if you're going to stand alone with your dreams and what you want to achieve. You will have to be strong against all odds. You will have to do everything in your power to achieve what you want. There is a famous saying from Zig Ziglar Positive thinking won't let you do anything but it will let you do everything, better than negative thinking will. You will have to apply this, you will have to push it until you reach the desire results that you want to achieve. Against all odds you will arrived to the next cycle.

Results - The results, varies depending on the action that you've performed. Do not expect that you will achieve what you want if you only invest a little on your dreams and what you want. You have to consistently train yourself, discipline yourself. Seek mentors and people with the same dream as yours and always reaffirm what you want in life. In the potential and action cycle you will know what you need to do in order for you to achieve your desire results and you always have to fuel your passion and always keep on going because in the end, the result is what really matters. Result is the accomplishment of all the hardship you've done with your goals and dream and it gives us rewards and accomplishment, the sense of satisfaction and victory. The sense of happiness, and what better joy it is to win and do whatever it takes to achieve your goal, this gives us a story that also motivates other people and dreamers like us. :)

Belief/Certainty- Last and not the least, belief and certainty. Part of the success cycle is believing yourself and having certainty about what you want to achieve in life. This is your dream, this is your goal and aspiration. Nobody but you can make it happen so you better believe and be certain that it is doable, it is attainable and you need to have a strong conviction of your dreams. You will have to protect your dream against negative minds and about all the people who's watching you. Remember, all that really matters are the people who believes in you and what you are doing. You are doing this for yourself and those that really matters. You will be amazed of what you can do if your singleminded and you don't second guess what you believe, you'll be astounded of what you're capable of. Believing and being certain will make you reach the success you want to accomplished and achieve!

Here's a video from the convention that I recorded during Thursday general session, it is just partial but listening to role model and people with achievement and whom you want to be a role model will give you big impact in life.

I'm still very ignited with the learning's I have and hope you picked up some great information from this article. Have a blast and be ignited!  - Mark

Here are some of the awesome people I met(friends, mentors, business partners) at the Usana International Convention 2014 at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Joseph Jaylo on taking actions for his dreams

Everybody has their dream, a dream that you
can realized by working smart and hard for it or rather,  a dream that will just be a dream without doing anything. When I was in college I became a working student, I worked on a certain agency as a product endorser to support my studies. It's hard because I need to manage my time but I have no choice I need to do it to support myself. At the middle of the semester, something went wrong, instead of using my allowance for my studies I have to give part of it to my mom to supply the needs in our home until I decided to stop going to school and work to provide for our families needs. I worked on a production company for a year. When I was in that company my brother told me to sell USANA products so that I can have extra income and that's what I did. While I'm doing it, I notice that it was good because one of my co-worker tried the product and he saw the goodness of the product. He's been more productive and kind of more energetic and I said to myself, "It's not really hard to sell the products because the product can speak for itself through the results". So when my contract was finished I started doing the Usana business and now I'm very happy that I'm a part of this growing team. My brother has just bought his new car, and I was really excited with the possibilities that could happen in my life. Now, I'm being mentored by leaders who are successful and I can say that it's great to be mentored by people with results. Professional people who choose to live their life as an entrepreneur and not as an employee and I'm learning a lot from them.

"Dreams are illustrations from the book your soul is writing about you". And it is the reason why I joined my team XTRM 1-11.

Mentors Billy dela Fuente and Jerlyn Sabran-Batic.

I believe that I deserve a better life like everyone has and I believe that every hardship in life is worth it when you reach the peak of success, with the push of the great people around me.

A dream that needs to be realized with massive action and help with my mentors. A very exciting journey ahead of me. - Joseph

Supplement Spotlight: Calcium for Better Bones

Getting enough calcium and vitamin D is essential to building strong, dense bones when you're young and to keeping them strong and healthy as you age.

Calcium is a mineral that is necessary for life. In addition to building bones and keeping them healthy, calcium helps our blood clot, nerves send messages and muscles contract . About 99 percent of the calcium in our bodies is in our bones and teeth. Each day, we lose calcium through our skin, nails, hair, sweat, urine and feces, but our bodies cannot produce new calcium. Women lost calcium through menstruation and pregnancy that's why it is really important too for women.

That’s why it’s important to try to get calcium from the food we eat. When we don’t get enough calcium for our body’s needs, it is taken from our bones. But are we getting the right amount of calcium from the food that we eat? And do we monitor it? For today's blog I'm giving a link to our corporate office blog for Calcium, "Calcium for better bones"written by Emily Alaniz. Let's protect our bones. :) Gob bless.

People Spotlight: Jeremiah Bolivar

One of my mentor ask me, why am I doing Usana? What got me into this? First of all the reason why I'm doing Usana is because of my mother. Before taking the product my mother was suffering from diabetes and it helped her and lowered her sugar cravings and another thing is because of the current situation that we have in my family. My father is a taxi driver and his daily income can't afford to send us to college and it's only enough to feed us for a day and sometimes we only eat twice a day. That time I realized and I said to myself that someday I will be successful, the situation that I'm experiencing today will not be my future . I have many dreams and one of my dream is to help and support our church in Cavite specially my Pastor . First I thank God for this opportunity and I thank also Usana because at my young age it was presented to me by my close friend and I thank him also for introducing me to this industry . Years ago I didn't expect that someday I'll be into business and building a team with great and passionate minds . That time I don't know how, when and where to start the business but thanks to my team we set goals and we didn't stop until we get it, we set our direction . Now it's almost a year since I started doing the business . There have been many rejections and disappointments but it didn't hindered me to achieve my dreams and it help me to improve myself . There are many improvements in my life and in my family's health specially my parents and now I'm happy that I am part of XTRM 111 and also our team here in Cavite. Opportunities are never lost; someone will take the one you miss and that opportunity that someone missed is now on my hands . I'm grateful that I'm on my way to success, learning from the best, seeking mentorship to those powerful great speakers that normally I wouldn't dare talk to. For those who are reading this article,  I dare you don't wait for opportunities you have to jump for opportunities and eventually you'll achieve your dreams. I'm very excited in my future ahead of me with this company. - Jeremiah

Supplement Spotlight: Bring on the BiOmega Fish Oil

Omega-3 fatty acids helps support heart, bone, joint, skin, brain and even your mood.
The question is which sources of omega-3 is positively good for you? But for our money, fish oil is still the ideal choice.

There are lots of good pills or tablets out there and some looks like a fantastic deal, but to get the same EPA and DHA as you would get from one daily dose of USANA BiOmega™ fish oil supplement, you’d have to take about five capsules a day. And you’d have to spend over $200 a month! That's too much! And from my experience, people say that you can get the omega-3s you need from a healthy diet or from a wild-caught salmon everyday. But what about the toxins that we may occasionally encounter? You don't want any mercury from over consumption of fish.

With Usana's Biomega, everything is tested thoroughly. It's FDA approved and tested and certified by NSF a leading provider of independent test result. It went and undergo a process called Double Molecular Distillation, it is fortified with Vitamin D, has no fishy aftertaste and provides 1050mg of EPA+DHA in only 2 capsules. USANA’s fish oil supply is Marine Stewardship Council certified. MSC-labeled products come from, and can be traced back to, sustainable fisheries. Yay! You'll love the taste too because of the added lemon oil.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Paul Jaylo preparing for
his Power Presentation.
Being in our nice comfy comfort zone; it is what prevents us from pursuing our dreams and achieving the goals that we want.  The good news is that your zone isn’t a jail you can't break out of; it is a place that you've created over time and can be left behind if you want to.  You are free to leave anytime, but you have to be ready and be committed to changing.

Below is a step-by-step guide to breaking out of your comfort zone and growing your business.

1.  Understand the return on investment (ROI) in stepping out of your comfort zone. Some of these benefits include standing out in a crowd, overcoming your fear, trying new things, and learning more. Imagine what these benefits can do for your business.
Jordan Kemper table presentation with
Health and Freedom Newspaper.

2. Identify someone in your field that you look up to and admire. List that person’s qualities and accomplishments.  Cross out the ones that you have in common.  From the items that remain, rank them in order of importance to you.  You now have a set of objectives to start on, so take them one step at a time.  What can you do right now to begin to achieve the first one on your list?
XTRM 1-11 Mentors.

3. Put all your cards on the table.  Fear is the most powerful emotion, so assess what you are afraid of that has prevented your business growth.  Pledge to yourself to jump in head first. For example, if the idea of public speaking makes you want to run for the hills, call your local library and set up a workshop.  The venue is small, but will force you to face your fear and make it easier to do again.

Simon Chan with our business partners.

4. Expect and embrace change.  The nature of our comfort zones is that they are predictable.  Even if what you are doing on a regular basis is making you money, you may be leaving a lot of money on the table if you don’t try something new.  Adjust your mindset to one that willingly accepts change because stepping out of your comfort zone will bring about a great deal of it.

Ibong Ora on Personal Branding.

5. Visualize yourself doing it.  Whatever it may be that you are afraid of doing, close your eyes for a few minutes and picture yourself doing it successfully.  The mind is a very powerful thing, and by continually focusing yourself toward the positive, you will be more likely to achieve your goals.

Coach Mark on Positive
Transformation.

6. Work backwards.  When developing a plan of action, pinpoint your endgame first.  When you have an outcome in mind, your actions will be more specific and effective.  Furthermore, you will be better able to stay motivated while working toward that end.

Billy dela Fuente, focus on where you want to go.

What advice do you have about leaving your comfort zone?  Please share your suggestions with us in the comment section below.

USANA Canada: The Next Generation of Top Athletes

Where will future Team USANA athletes originate? How about the world champions of dance, skiing, waterskiing, swimming, horseback riding and more?

I believe some of the finest future athletes in the world are already in the USANA family. Last week we introduced you to a few. Today we will share two more stories.

Financial freedom and a healthy USANA lifestyle enable many USANA Associates to dedicate time and financial resources to sports and activities their children enjoy.

We asked several USANA Canada Associates how USANA has helped them and how has that enabled their kids to excel and participate in recreational activities. Their answers highlight how USANA improves lives of not only the Associates but also greatly enriches the lives of their children — future champions.

This is the second installment. Read the first post featuring other potential future USANA champions.
Lavender and Winslowe

Lavender Morantz, Ruby Director

Self-described serial entrepreneur Lavender Morantz began her career with USANA not long before she learned she was pregnant with her daughter.
CA Young Athletes - Lavender Morantz

Winslowe, who is now 3 years old, is the epitome of a USANA baby.

“She’s healthy, bright, sassy and always happy,” Lavender says. “She is very active, and very interested in … well, everything. I am so grateful for her radiant health every day. She’s absolutely the love of my life!”

Winslowe loves to be active. She currently does ballet, swims, skis, plays the piano and adores camping. “I

Winslowe is in pre-school now, but any time mother and daughter want, they can take a day, week, or month off together to do the things they enjoy. The year Winslowe turned 1, they took 12 trips together in 12 months.

“There are only so many firsts you get to witness as a mom, and I don’t want to miss a thing,” Lavender says.

Lavender has been an athlete much of her life: competitive show jumping, dressage, ballet, gymnastics, board sports of every kind — and the list goes on. It’s surely rubbing off on Winslowe.

Lavender’s happy to be in the best health of her life, and she never imagined feeling better in her 30s than she ever did in her teens or 20s. “It allows me to keep up with my wild little girl, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“The values kids learn at a young age stay with them for life, and I am so grateful that our health and our freedom are front and center thanks to USANA,” Lavender says.

Shirlea Frederick, Gold Director

Shirlea Frederick’s sister and 3-Star Diamond Director Susanne Cunningham introduced her to USANA in 1995. Three years later Shirlea was raising three young children, including daughter Alexis.

“As my business continued to grow, Alexis’ love of dance grew,” Shirlea says. “Each year as she added more dance classes and more dance trips, my USANA income also continued to grow. Much of the income I earned was invested in her dance career.”

The flexibility a home-based business offers allowed for the stay-at-home mom to shuttle Alexis to her many dance classes and to take part in her daughter’s growing passion.

As Alexis has grown as a dancer — and has done many solos in ballet, hip hop and jazz — the time commitment for her to practice has grown and the financial investment has increased as well.
Alexis, second from left on front row, at ballet practice.

Alexis, second from left on front row, at ballet practice.

“The USANA income has totally been the income that has allowed Alexis to be able to dance in so many disciplines and travel to the many cities she has travelled,” Shirlea says.

Dancing has helped shape Alexis’ life and she has grown up to be a self-confident young woman who works hard and has developed amazing poise and public-speaking abilities.

“She has learned what it takes to work hard and the pride she can have when she works hard and accomplishes her dreams,” Shirlea says. “She has learned to sacrifice some things in life for the sake of her dance career and the rewards that come with working hard for a dream and a goal.”

For Shirlea, USANA has changed her life in that it allowed her the time and financial freedom to help her children fulfill their dreams of the sporting activities they have loved to do. And for Alexis, in particular, it’s allowed her to dance as much as she wants and to travel extensively the past five years to further her dance career.

“My commitment to continue working at my USANA business comes from wanting to give my children the best that they can have in life, including a wonderful dance career that will have memories for Alexis for a lifetime!” Shirlea says.

On Being Positive with Friends and Teammates

Being positive and happy can brighten your life, always ready for challenges and always looking for the silver lining in every situation. Having good companies can help you prolong your life, so I tell you now -  "Surround your self with positive people and magical things will happen in your life." This is our culture in our business, not just working hard but by sharing our good hearts. Do not worry about your past or your future, the treasure lies in the present because that is when you can make a difference and take action. Let's keep on sharing all the positivity that we have.... :)

Here's some quotes and pictures of my amazing business partner and friends.

“Affirmations are our mental vitamins, providing the supplementary positive thoughts we need to balance the barrage of negative events and thoughts we experience daily.”

“It makes a big difference in your life when you stay positive.”

“Elevate your inside game. A negative attitude is below the horizon...a place for lonesome hearts.”

“Be fanatically positive and militantly optimistic. If something is not to your liking, change your liking.”

“When you concentrate your energy purposely on the future possibility that you aspire to realize, your energy is passed on to it and makes it attracted to you with a force stronger than the one you directed towards it.”

“Life is a bowl of cherries. Some cherries are rotten while others are good; its your job to throw out the rotten ones and forget about them while you enjoy eating the ones that are good! There are two kinds of people: those who choose to throw out the good cherries and wallow in all the rotten ones, and those who choose to throw out all the rotten ones and savor all the good ones.”

Keep in mind to:
  • Believe a Positive Attitude is a Choice
  • Rid Your Life of Negativity
  • Look For the Positive in Life
  • Reinforce Positivity in Yourself
  • Share Positivity with Others

This is how we are at our business. Positive and eagerly motivated with each other.

Super Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines the morning of Nov. 8. Since that time, our USANA family in the Philippines and at the Corporate office have been looking for ways to help the more than 500,000 Filipinos displaced by the storm.

In Salt Lake City, the USANA True Health Foundation sprung into action, donating $20,000 to International Relief Teams, a nonprofit international humanitarian organization, to aid victims. In the Philippines, independent distributors immediately began mobilizing their own relief operations. In addition to that, the Independent Distributor Council in the Philippines organized a 5,000-participant Fun Run on Jan. 19, to raise money to help others in need through the True Health Foundation.

On the picture link below, you will find the video on the successful relief operation conducted by the True Health Foundation. Can't help but love this company, they continues to spread the dream of Dr. Myron Wentz and help the people around the world.
